Man kills woman, turns gun on himself at Temple Terrace bowling alley

TEMPLE TERRACE — A man fatally shot a woman and then turned the gun on himself Thursday in the parking lot of the Terrace Sports bowling alley and arcade, according to Temple Terrace police.

Candy Hildreth, 49, of Seffner said she was pulling out of a Kmart parking lot across E Busch Boulevard when she heard a gunshot from across the street.

The man, she said, shot the woman twice — first in the mouth. Then, he shot himself, fell to the ground and climbed on top of the woman, Hildreth said.

He continued waving the gun. People nearby stayed back until officers arrived.

"I’m so upset," Hildreth said. "It’s a really devastating thing to see. I’ve never seen anything like it."

The chaos erupted around 1:40 p.m. at the bowling alley at 5311 E Busch Blvd.

The couple were seen together talking on the north side of Busch Boulevard, across from the bowling alley.

"Then, they crossed over to this side, and that’s where the trouble began," said Temple Terrace police spokesman Mike Dunn.

Police said the woman was dead when officers arrived. They erected a tent over where her body lay in the parking lot.

The man was taken to Tampa General Hospital for treatment. His condition was not known Thursday.

Dunn said the incident is under investigation and that police are not looking for anyone else. Police also had not identified the female victim or male gunman, or a possible motive.

But officers did recover the gun used in the shooting.

"It was strictly between the two of them, we believe," Dunn said.

Dunn said the shooting took place in the afternoon, in daylight, in a busy pedestrian area: "Anyone who may have seen anything is being talked to."

Terrace Sports also offers laser tag, serves food and hosts birthday parties, church groups and fundraising events. The bowling alley staff declined to comment.

In 2012, the venue made headlines when police said scores of teens were involved in a big Sunday night brawl in the parking lot.
